Should We Stop Making Non-electric Cars?

These days, car pollutants cause immediate and long-term effects on the environment. So if we want to protect the environment, we should stop making non-electric car.

Firstly, car pollution is one of the major causes of global warming. Cars and trucks emit carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases which contribute to one-fifth of the United States' total global warming pollution. Greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere, which causes worldwide temperatures to rise. Without greenhouse gases, the earth will be covered in ice, but excessive amounts of fossil fuels, such as gasoline and diesel, has caused an increase of 0.6 degrees Celsius, or 1 degree F, in global temperatures since pre-industrial times, and this will continue to rise over the coming decades. Warmer global temperature affect farming, wild life, sea levels and natural landscapes.

Besides, cars will affect the air, the soil, and the water. Nitrous oxide contributes to the depletion of the ozone layer, which shields the earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Sulfer dioxide and nitrogen dioxide mixed with rainwater may create acid rain, which damages crops, forests, and other vegetation and buildings. Oil and fuel spills from cars and trucks seep into the soil near highways, and discarded fuel and particulates from vehicle emissions contaminate lakes, rivers and wetlands.

Then, what can we do to reduce pollution from cars? First, walk or bike and use the bike-share programs, or use the public transit if possible. Second, when we are shopping for a new car, look for fuel efficient vehicles with low greenhouse gas emissions. These cars can help the environment while potentially saving our money on fuel costs at the pump. In addition, when we are looking for a new car, we can use some websites to compare different vehicle models and choose the one which is environmental- friendly and suitable for us.

According to the opinions and data that I gave above, I strongly believe that we should stop making non-electric cars!
